Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is essential for the human body to function optimally. If you consume more vitamin D than your body requires, it is stored in the liver and used by the body when it requires the vitamin. Moreover, Vitamin D is known to have a number of health benefits when consumed in the right amounts. Can this vitamin help manage pain? How can vitamin D supplements help alleviate pain and manage it better?

How can vitamin D supplements help manage pain?

  • Regulation of calcium in the body: Vitamin D helps synthesize and assimilate calcium in the body. Without this vitamin, calcium that is consumed through food and as supplements cannot be absorbed and used by the body. Vitamin D ensures that the right amount of calcium is absorbed and used by the body to avoid deficiency as well as over-calcification of blood vessels. This, in turn, avoids pain caused by lack of or excess calcium in the body.
  • Regulation of sleep: Sleep-deprivation can cause and worsen pain. When you sleep, the body rests, repairs itself, and ensures there is no major wear and tear in the body. Lack of sleep means that the body does not get enough time to heal, thereby causing or worsening pain. Vitamin D helps regulate sleep cycles and reduces sleep disturbances, and this helps manage pain better.
  • Reduction of musculoskeletal pain: Calcium regulation plays a big part in the reduction of musculoskeletal pain. Along with that, vitamin D also ensures good immunity and a strong immune system. All of this come together to ensure better musculoskeletal pain management.

Sources of Vitamin D

Sunlight is the biggest and only natural source of vitamin D. Your skin must be exposed to direct sunlight for a few minutes, without sunscreen, at least a few times a week for you to get adequate amounts of vitamin D. A pair of shorts and a short-sleeved top or shirt can be worn so that adequate amount of skin is exposed to direct sunlight.

There are supplements available that can make up for the lack of adequate vitamin D in your body. As it is a fat-soluble vitamin and cannot be flushed out of the body, you should ensure that you take the right amount of supplements. Consulting your physician or a specialist doctor can help understand your vitamin D requirements.
