What is Rosemary Essential Oil?

Origin of Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary or Rosmarinus officinalis is a member of the mint family. Rosemary comes from the Latin word ros marinus that means "dew of the sea", which is only appropriate since the herb originated in the Mediterranean and is now often used to French and Italian cuisine.

Precautions and Side Effects

Do not take orally. Always remember that essential oils should not be ingested orally since they are highly concentrated and can be toxic. Large intake of rosemary essential oil has been associated with vomiting, spasms and coma.  

Children and Pregnant Women. This kind of products need to be kept out of reach of children for it may cause serious side effects when not properly administered. If you are pregnant or nursing, you should consult your healthcare provider or aromatherapist.

Sensitive Skin. People with sensitive skin should be cautious when using this kind of product for it may irritate and damage their skin. They should dilute the rosemary oil with another carrier oil such as coconut oil. It is better to do a skin patch test first to make sure that your skin is safe from any serious reactions when the oil is applied directly to the skin. 

Anticoagulant Drugs. Rosemary essential oil can interact with anticoagulant medications that include blood-thinning drugs such as Aspirin and Warfarin. It can increase the effectivity of these kinds of drugs that could lead to serious side effects such as affecting the blood’s ability to clot. 

Aspirin Allergy. The herb rosemary contains an ingredient called salicylate which is very similar to aspirin. If used, this might cause a serious side effect or reaction for people who are allergic to aspirin.
