What is Lavender Essential Oil?

Lavender essential oil is one of the most favoured oils around the market due to its versatility, where it provides a lot of benefits and uses. It has a sweet floral scent that brings comfort and feeling of protection which helps promote relaxation and better sleep.

Origin of Lavender Oil

Lavender is a flowering plant under the mint family, with a scientific name of Lavandula angustifolia. It is native to the Mediterranean region and northern Africa.

Lavender is now widely distributed to different parts of the world including Bulgaria, United States, Australia and Asia, where it has over 30 species and hundreds of variations. 

The term lavender came from the Latin word “lavare” which means “to wash’. The use of lavender oil dated back since the ancient times. Romans, Greeks and Arabs put lavender essence in washed clothes, perfumes, baths, rituals and cosmetics.

Lavender oil is extracted through steam distillation of the flowers of the plant, where about 16 kilograms of lavender are needed in order to produce one 15ml of lavender essential oil.

    Precautions and Side Effects

    Hypnotics. It is advised not to use lavender essential oil when you are using hypnotics, sedatives or benzodiazepines as it can increase the effectiveness of the drugs which can cause serious side effects that can lead to drowsiness, slow heart rate and decreased respiration. Hypnotics include diazepam, amobarbital, chlordiazepoxide etc.

    Hypotension. Lavender essential oil is not appropriate for individuals who have low blood pressure or hypotension due to its hypotensive effects which can contribute to the dropping of your blood pressure readings. 

    Sensitive Skin. It can cause an allergic skin reaction, so make sure to do a skin patch test before applying to your skin. 

    Do not take orally. Keep out of reach of children. Large intake of lavender essential oil has been associated with vomiting, diarrhoea and anorexia.
