What is Eucalyptus Essential Oil?

Eucalyptus essential oil helps ease colds and flu as well as support respiratory health. It has a cooling effect that will surely help you feel energized, clear your mind and give you focus.

Moreover, the eucalyptus tree offers a lot of benefits not only for your health but it's also a substantial source of food for wildlife, especially for koalas. Its bark is used for papermaking, while the wood is used for the production of timber and fuel.

Aside from aromatherapy, eucalyptus oil is widely used in vapour rubs, ointments, perfumes and food industries due to its strong fresh, menthol and medicinal aroma since it has a top or head fragrance note.

Origin of Eucalyptus Oil

The oil is extracted from the leaves of selected eucalyptus tree species, mostly from the Eucalyptus globulus which is also called Tasmanian blue gum tree. The extraction method used is steam distillation of fresh or dried leaves and young twigs of the eucalyptus tree.

There are more than 500 species of eucalyptus tree that belongs to the Myrtle or Myrtaceae family. The tree is native to Australia and is now grown extensively in different parts of the world, like China, South Africa, Europe and India.

The eucalyptus tree is considered to be one of the tallest flowering trees in the world and can reach a height of 100 meters (300 feet), but it typically grows from 30 to 55 meters (100 to 180 feet).

The name eucalyptus came from the Greek word 'eu' which means “well” and 'kalyptos' means “covered”. It is because the flower bud is well-protected and concealed by a cap that will eventually fall off when matured.
